Racing For Scott By Shannon Crocker and Linden Williamson

Linden Williamson, a Texas Lutheran University (TLU) alumna, has successfully completed the Boston Marathon this April with a heart full of determination and a spirit of joy. For Williamson, this race is not just about crossing the finish line; it’s about celebrating life, honoring a cherished mentor, and raising funds for brain cancer research. Her journey is a testament to resilience, showcasing how she has overcome challenges and persevered in the face of adversity.
The journey began when Dr. Scott Bailey, a beloved psychology professor at TLU, was diagnosed with glioblastoma multiforme, an aggressive brain cancer. The news deeply affected the TLU community, and for Williamson, it was a call to action. “When Scott was diagnosed, I felt a mix of emotions,” she shares. “But I realized I could channel my passion for racing into something meaningful.” This moment marked the beginning of her resilient journey, where she transformed her grief into a powerful force for change.
Williamson has joined forces with Gray Nation Endurance, the official endurance program of the National Brain Tumor Society (NBTS), to raise awareness and funds for brain cancer research. This partnership allows her to combine her love for racing with a cause close to her heart. Through her resilience, she has found a way to make a significant impact, demonstrating that even in the face of personal challenges, one can contribute to a greater good.
A rising star in wheelchair racing, Williamson’s journey began two years ago as a way to balance her academic pursuits with a healthy lifestyle. Her dedication and joy for the sport quickly propelled her to the professional level, where she not only competes but also inspires others. In 2024, she was one of two American elite wheelchair athletes invited to the Sanlam Cape Town Marathon, where she joyfully secured a third-place finish. Her resilience in overcoming physical challenges and achieving success in her sport is truly inspiring.
As a Postbaccalaureate Research Education Program (PREP) scholar at UT Health’s Graduate School of Biomedical Science, Williamson is committed to advancing scientific knowledge while honoring Dr. Bailey’s legacy. “Scott was more than a professor; he was a mentor and a friend,” she says. “His support and encouragement have been a guiding light in my life.” Her resilience is evident in her dedication to both her academic and athletic pursuits, showing that she can thrive in multiple areas despite the obstacles she faces.
Through her participation in the Boston Marathon, Williamson aims to raise crucial funds for glioblastoma research and bring hope to patients and their families. Her journey is a testament to the power of perseverance, community, and the joy of competing. Her resilience shines through as she continues to push forward, inspiring others to do the same.
Join us in supporting Linden Williamson’s race for a cure and celebrate the joy of racing with her. Linden is always looking for sponsors to partner with, to raise awareness of adaptive sports and help her advance in the sport. Her direct email is racinglinden@gmail.com.
Every dollar donated goes directly toward research—and supports the hope of a brighter future for those diagnosed with brain cancer as well as the determination of a dedicated student and the professor who means the world to her.
